I want to be both a worker as well as trade union leader

Safina (23), Mirpur, Dhaka is a Workers’ Group leader. From 2009, she is working in a Garment Factory in Mirpur, Dhaka. Presently, her salary is 7,500 taka per month and can reach 10,000 taka with overtime.

Safina has very strong organizational skills and managed to organize her trade union very well. In order to maximize her strengths, the Federation of Garments’ Workers invited her to various leadership trainings. Through this, she has been able to develop her capacities and skills, allowing her to become a great leader.

Presently Safina is the group leader of a Workers’ Group where she actively directs the members. The factory management where Safina works didn’t provide her the contract. Recently she demanded it from the factory, which still refused to give contracts to her and her group’s members, but their bargaining is still ongoing.

Safina has urged an inspector in the Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishment (DIFE) to inspect the factory properly and dynamically advocates for the workers’ rights.
